The Lord is My Confidence

The Lord is My Confidence

The Lord is my Confidence. Do you know what it means to have confidence in God and believe in yourself as a Christian in ministry? Is it wrong to have self-confidence? In ministry and life, God-Confidence and confidence go hand-in-hand. Combining God-confidence with a firm knowledge of who you are in God’s eyes, should naturally result in confidence. Notice I didn’t say SELF-confidence.

When the very foundation of our life and breath is in God; when our faith is anchored in the work of Christ on the cross; our life is no longer about self, it is about Jesus and His likeness in us. This is the death of self.

The Lord is My Confidence

The kind of confidence I’m referring to isn’t about self-love. It is about understanding how God sees you and then embracing that as the absolute truth you will live by. Love what God created – You! Confidence does not have to create pride. Instead, when your focus is on being like Jesus, then believing in the power of His work inside you will cause humility and bring a new inner strength.

Did you know that God sees you as perfect and wonderful and He rejoices over you with singing?

The Eternal your God is standing right here among you, and He is the champion who will rescue you. He will joyfully celebrate over you; He will rest in His love for you; He will joyfully sing because of you like a new husband.” Zephaniah 3:17 The Voice

When you reject yourself by hating or doubting yourself, you are rejecting what God considers to be His best. Instead, you can find the power of confidence by allowing God’s confidence and belief in you to overflow in your life. It’s about believing in what God has done and is doing in and through you! Your belief in Him creates a firm confidence in who you are in Him!

When we focus on our flaws, faults, shortcomings, and constantly compare ourselves to others, it means we have lost sight of the cleansing work of Jesus on the cross and our faith needs to be built up to remember that He did this for everyone while we were all sinning, flawed, miserable human beings! You are no exception. You are clean, pure, worthy, and beautiful in Him.

We all need to revisit the cross regularly to remind ourselves of not only the incredible sacrifice but also, the amazing transformation it provided for us. No matter how long you have served God or what you do in life, it is easy to lose sight of the wonder of the cross. You may be in a ministry where you are continually reminding others but forget to take the time to do this for yourself!

Settling Your Heart

A trip back to the cross can help you get back to the confidence which means no more questioning and doubting. First – you are a sinner and so is every other human being who comes to this earth except One – The One – Jesus. You see, all have sinned, and all their futile attempts to reach God in His glory fail.” Romans 3:23 The Voice.

Without Jesus, we are united in sin. Are you a sinner saved by grace? Yes, just like all who accept Christ. That is settled.

Second, if you have accepted Christ as your Savior, you have been made new in Him, by His blood. Now, if anyone is enfolded into Christ, he has become an entirely new creation. All that is related to the old order has vanished. Behold, everything is fresh and new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 TPT Again, this is now settled so no more doubt or confusion about whether or not you have been made new.

Third, settle what it means to be made new in Christ. Does it mean you will never sin or struggle again? Does it mean nothing bad will ever happen? No, it does not mean any of that. While we are made new in our spirit, we are still living in the flesh which is resisting our efforts to change. This means we will sin, we will fail, we will struggle, and bad things may happen. It also means we have the power to overcome the flesh and live in the Spirit with joy and peace if we choose to.

On another occasion, Jesus spoke to the crowds again. I am the light that shines through the cosmos; if you walk with Me, you will thrive in the nourishing light that gives life and will not know darkness. John 8:12 The Voice

What it ultimately means is that – WE ARE OVERCOMERS! You can overcome the flesh and the devil but not in your own strength. You can only do it through Christ. It is His strength. His victory. His blood. His love. His redemption. It is all about Him! The great thing is that He did it all for us!

We will go through trials and tribulations with Jesus and the Holy Spirit taking us through to victory if we choose to. We will battle with finances or health or a variety of human struggles. ALL Christians are experiencing this battle every day of their lives. All Christians can be overcomers if they make the choice to do so.

“Everyone who trusts Jesus as the long-awaited Anointed One is a child of God, and everyone who loves the Father cannot help but love the child fathered by Him.Then how do we know if we truly love God’s children? We love them if we love God and keep His commands. You see, to love God means that we keep His commands, and His commands don’t weigh us down. Everything that has been fathered by God overcomes the corrupt world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith.

Who is the person conquering the world? It is the one who truly trusts that Jesus is the Son of God, that Jesus the Anointed is the One who came by water and blood—not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. The Spirit of God testifies to this truth because the Spirit is the truth. I John 5:1-5 The Voice Emphasis mine.

Self-Confidence is Sand

Stop searching for SELF-confidence. It is sand that blows away in the first wind. The rock you need to build your life upon is Christ, not yourself. Will you gain confidence and be built up and encouraged? Yes, of course, because that is all God does. He only does positive things which draw us into His will for us.

When you are in any type of ministry, the need to exude confidence to others can slowly swing you into self-confidence. It is simply a slow process we don’t realize is happening. We are so focused on being there for everyone else that self slides into the driver’s seat. At some point, exhaustion or feeling completely inadequate push us into realizing what has happened.

Ministry can also be a confidence killer. One minute you are feeling great because you believe you are right in God’s will. The next minute, a failure or a criticism knocks you down to the bottom and you begin questioning yourself, your calling, your faith, and your ability to fulfill your calling.

Perhaps you failed in an epic way. Does that mean that ministry is over for you? No. It just means you are human. If you did something wrong, make the trip to the cross, ask for forgiveness from God and accept it. Leave it at the foot of the cross. Next, go to the person/people you have harmed and ask them for forgiveness.

Don’t make excuses to them or God. Just come clean and then, go to Psalm 51 and be like David. Confess, repent, worship, and get on with life. Take the time you need to heal and be fully restored but never, ever give up unless God says to make a change.

“For the Lord will be your confidence And will keep your foot from being caught.” Proverbs 3:26 NASB

Awareness of the constant presence and work of God in our lives builds confidence.

Confidence comes through awareness. While Wikipedia isn’t the greatest source of information, I loved this definition of awareness:
Awareness is the ability to directly know and perceive, to feel, or to be cognizant of events. More broadly, it is the state of being conscious of something. … The concept is often synonymous to consciousness and is also understood as being consciousness itself.

Develop Your Awareness – God Confidence

I am also giving you the definition of ‘confidence’ according to the Miriam Webster dictionary and I want you to really consider it and make it personal. Confidence:

  • a feeling or consciousness (Awareness) of one’s powers or of reliance on one’s circumstances
  • faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way
  • the quality or state of being certain
  • a relation of trust or intimacy
  • reliance on another’s discretion
  • support especially in a legislative body

Spiritual Awareness

A feeling or consciousness of one’s powers or of reliance on one’s circumstances – The Lord is my Confidence. The first one might sound like self-confidence – being conscious of one’s powers. However, as a Christian, this is a feeling or consciousness of THE ONE – the Holy Spirit – who lives inside you. He is the one with all the power and you can rely on Him in your circumstances. This is the quality of Spiritual Awareness we all need to cultivate.

In the midst of great difficulty, are you spiritually aware or are you self-aware?

Faith Awareness

Faith or belief that you will act in the right way starts with faith that God will always act in the right way on your behalf – The Lord is My Confidence. This is Faith Awareness. In the midst of stress, are you aware of faith or doubt? If you have just been criticized or faced rejection, what are you more aware of – your human feelings or your faith-feelings? Our feelings are real but do not always reflect the truth since God’s truth is not based on feelings.

God’s truth is based on who He is. He cannot be anything other than truth, light, love, peace, justice, and order. You were made in His image. You are also all of these things. Our struggle is the flesh which has to be subdued and continually put at the foot of the cross.

Truth Awareness

The quality or state of being certain – The Lord is My Confidence. This is Truth Awareness. Truth awareness, as I just said comes into conflict with the flesh. Are you certain as to what the truth is in the midst of your circumstances? Two things are certain – you are not alone and you are not condemned by God. No matter what is happening around you, you need to build your Truth Awareness and rely on it, not yourself. In addition, a constant awareness of the truth will increase your God-Confidence.

What is the truth? The Word says that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. John 14:6

  • So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” John 8:31-32 NASB
  • In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.” James 1:18 NASB
  • And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.” 1 John 5:20 NASB
  • And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 NASB
  • When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,John 15:26 NASB

God’s Love Awareness

A relation of trust or intimacy. This is God’s Love Awareness and it is strictly the love of God – The Lord is My Confidence. The love of man is fickle, changing, swayed by circumstance, and unstable. The love of God is none of that. Just go back to 1 Corinthians 13 and you will have all the reminder you need of what the Love of God really consists of. When you feel crushed and despairing, your God’s Love Awareness can lift and heal. That’s what His love does.

His love will never hurt or harm. He only does good. What is your intimacy level with Him right now? Perhaps, you need to find it again or deepen it. Here is a study you can use to do exactly that – Preparing Your Heart for More of God.

Relational Awareness

Reliance on another’s discretion. This Relational Awareness our relationship with the Holy Spirit. – the Lord is My Confidence. Whenever we are unsure, we can ask the Holy Spirit for help and guidance and He will give it to us. We only rely on those we know well, who have proven themselves to be reliable. The Holy Spirit is always reliable. In our relationship with Him, He is always discreet and reliable.

What does discretion really mean? The definition of discreet includes these things: having or showing discernment or good judgment in conduct and especially in speech PRUDENTespeciallycapable of preserving prudent silence 2: UNPRETENTIOUS, MODEST

It is an interesting quality in life. The Holy Spirit is discreet. He isn’t loud or showy. He doesn’t draw attention to Himself even though He is God! He has perfect judgment as He guides and accompanies us through life. He will only speak God’s words to us. We can rely on His discretion. He will not embarrass or humiliate us. We can rely on Him completely and we must always be aware of this.

Positional Awareness

Support especially in a legislative body. Have you ever been judged by someone? It hurts. The pain is hard to get over. It can destroy a ministry or a person. When we are unjustly judged and feel as if we have no advocate or support, it can be devastating. However, we do have an advocate – Jesus. What does that have to do with positional awareness? If you are in court without a lawyer, your position is completely different than that of someone with a lawyer!

No human judgment against us can stand or even be brought before God because Jesus’ blood has covered us. So, though a person may cry out for us to be judged, Jesus says no! Remembering this is Positional Awareness – The Lord is My Confidence. Your position before God never changes because you are in Christ. No judgment on earth can change that. You have the best Lawyer who ever lived and no one who comes up against Him can ever win!

He is in heaven right now advocating to God on your behalf. He died for you and now He lives to be your advocate. In addition, He took your judgment. No earthly judgment supersedes what Jesus did. Nothing can change it – no words from any human on earth or any devil, can erase the full, complete forgiveness you are living in at this moment.

You are my little children, so I am writing these things to help you avoid sin. If, however, any believer does sin, we have a high-powered defense lawyer—Jesus the Anointed, the righteous—arguing on our behalf before the Father.” 1 John 2:1 The Voice

Yes, this scripture is talking about a personal sin being forgiven. If you sin, Jesus is your advocate. It is still the same principle. Jesus is there advocating for us.

The Perfect Example of God-Confidence

I want to give you a person who is the perfect example of God-confidence resulting in inner confidence. Mary, the Mother of Jesus. She was a teenager when she was visited by an angel who told her something no one on earth had ever heard before. She was probably poor, was already engaged to be married, yet barely flinched when an angel appeared to her.

At that time, engagements could only be ended by divorce and the woman could not initiate the divorce. Joseph, her husband-to-be, would have had a legal right to divorce her once he knew she was pregnant. Mary knew all of this. Yet, this is her response to being told she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God: “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38 NASB

This is faith! It is faith whose fruit is confidence. Mary didn’t protest and say – I can’t do this. I’m nobody, nothing, this will ruin my life. I’m too weak and insignificant to do this! Nope – the only thing she questioned was how a virgin could bear a child! She didn’t understand that but never questioned the angel’s explanation.

What she did understand was that if God said it, she could do it. She had a total awareness of the power of God to carry her through any situation. All she needed to know was how it was going to happen! Her awareness of the totality of God’s will, ways, Word, and love gave her complete trust and confidence that she could do this. We can live in this same confidence.

We have this same faith which says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 NKJV

God-confidence, faith, results in strength to fulfill His will.

“Now this is the confidence we have before Him: Whenever we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  And if we know that He hears whatever we ask, we know that we have what we have asked Him for.” 1 John 5:14-15 HCSB

Regaining Your God-Confidence

I absolutely understand that life can be rough and it is normal to go through ups and downs in our walk of faith. A few months ago, something was said to me that totally shook my confidence in what I was doing and I had to work through it by awakening my spiritual awareness, activating my faith awareness, rehearsing my truth awareness, stirring my Love Awareness, and reminding myself of my Relational and Positional awareness. I was shaken by a comment that basically told me to do something different than what God was telling me to do. But, by standing on what I knew God is saying, I regained my God-confidence.

Challenge yourself to sharpen your awareness of all the Christ is in you, for you, and to you. You won’t need to worry about self-confidence because your faith will give you all you need.
